An Ad Campaign Currently Running On US TV )

1) Being a Criminal Minds fan, I have to look askance when anybody says "Unsub".

2) My brother is a big-time Madden fan, as using an earlier version allowed him to perpetuate a virtual football league he and I and other friends started circa 1980. Before computers, we used a Coleco football game that consisted of a box with an electric light inside, illuminating translucent cards that represented offensive and defensive plays, plus spinners to randomly calculate yardage and success in field goal kicks.

The EA developers say that the models used in the commercial are basically the same ones developed for the Wii version of Madden 10.

3) Sustenance and Sustainability: It has been my belief for many years that when science concocts the first completely synthetic meat substitute, it would most resemble white-meat chicken, white-meat turkey or veal. Just an intinctive supposition, without any reasoning behind it. Artificial guys huckstering for real food--now. Artificial food--when?

On "Fresh Air" on National Public Radio they are doing a multipart story on fisheries and how overfishing is causing real problems both ecologically and economically. As much as I love to eat fish, and think I don't eat enough, I wonder if I'll have to give it up just because it will run out for a generation or more. Or worse, be gone for good. That farm-raised Tilapia from China doesn't seem so evil now.

Does anybody else find those "Don't Pay For White Teeth" ads just completely ghastly?

Today marks the passing of the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which repealed Prohibition. It might seem crazy to us now, but alcohol was illegal in the U.S. for 13 years. What common vice do you think is most likely to be outlawed in the future?

I don't know about "most likely", but what I want to see is a ban on advertising of prescription drugs on broadcast TV and via e-mail. The makers of Levitra and Cialis and Viagra make their products sound like recreational drugs. I think it's immoral and harmful to our society.

This both is and is not related to Life On Mars.

I was just looking through my e-mail and saw an ad from JC Whitney, a company I first learned about around 1973 and have casually following--and sometines done business with--ever since. Their business is in replacement parts and upgrades for cars and other motor vehicles.

Well, the ad in question included in-car entertainment systems...devices that combined radio, television, and video/audio storage/playback formats. They're getting relatively inexpensive now. But I just don't feel like getting one for Moonshine will ever be the right thing to do.

Moonshine is still nearly entirely how it came from the NUMMI factory circa 2001. The sound system has a CD player but doesn't play MP3 files. I wouldn't mind an MP3 upgrade, but it's not a big deal. Anything beyond that strikes me as being needlessly over-sophisticated and tasteless.

It's not just the sound system, tho'. I see ads for uber-tech ovens and refrigerators and flat screen TV sets and cell phones with a zillion features these days. Hewlett-Packard has a new desktop computer with a touch screen device built-in and the user interface software to take advantage of it. This is all very heavy stuff for a fellow who remembers a time before everybody had a computer, when all phones had rotary dials, when newspapers only had color for Sunday editions, and in-car entertainment was the kids in the back seat singing along to Elton John on the AM radio.

It's telling that people in the early Seventies were nostalgic for the Fifties (the song being sung in the above memory was "Crocodile Rock"). There was a very sudden growth in the standards of living at that time, and a mood of optimism that lasted practically the whole decade. Whereas the Seventies were when the social stress cracks were threatening to bring down the whole nation--just like NOW.

Anyway, the push for a greater standard of living just because, that's just selfishness. There was a time when I did want it all and wanted it right then and there--but it is not now. I don't feel like I deserve much more than what I have. Because of my fear of losing everything. There are many times I hate the simple life--but I wonder if anybody envies me.

I haven't heard one ad or speech from the man I'm planning to vote for Prez; can you think of a better reason to vote for somebody?

I plan to do the business on Wednesday, when the Early Voting polls open here in Tennessee.

...As It Was... )

And As It Is )

The second video is a teaser for this weekend's RBAR in Portugal.

PS: It has come to my attention that if an ordinary LJ reader accesses my page he/she will see advertising on the sides. I find that deplorable, as I don't get any benefit from LJ for the advertising, beyond my free hosting. If I switched to Plus, then I'd get more features but have to condone seeing ads myself. As I don't think I can afford a Paid account at the moment, it's something I can do nothing about. Pardon my venting...I just found it a nasty surprise. I apologize to all my regular readers and ask them to bear with me.

Hey.

As a promotion a local store was offering free "Old Tyme" photos taken of their customers today. They had a trailer wagon set up for the photography. Thing is, I've seen a lot of this stuff in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge over the years, and I can't say that it would work for me from the choices usually given. Old West?--Been there, done that. (Mom went Way Out West for a conference/vacation/family reunion when I was a kid, and brought back Western shirts and cowboy hats for me and my brother. I wore that Western shirt for one of my school pictures. Can't say I'm particularly proud of that.) Civil War?--Got a good buddy who is a real re-enactor, and if I wanted to, I could just go to him. Of course, anything "hillbilly" just galls my very strong "Yankee" sensibilities. (Okay, maybe I'm kidding, but I don't like this place very much, and "going native" is as cynical as it is politically incorrect.)

Meanwhile, I've posed in front of P-51 Mustangs, P-40 Warhawks, and various other pieces of airmobile hardware. I've even gotten in the cockpit of a replica Fokker D.VII biplane for a shoot. Not in period costume, tho'.

*Starts rumination*

Love: The scene is a football fan's rec room. Memorabilia and kitsch everywhere, from antique gear to lawn gnomes in team colors. The camera finally rests on the table lamp, an ordinary piece of brass with a plain white shade. The Font comes up: So what's with the lamp?
Next image: a Tiffany-style lamp with the team logo in stained glass.--Available from NFL.com's on-line store!

I love it because it's all Pittsburgh Steelers (yes, I'm from Western Pennsylvania. Problem with that?).

Hate: JCPenney (clothier/department store) is running a back-to-school campaign based on the 1980's movie The Breakfast Club, complete with that insipid and inane (so labeled by the band that made it a hit in the first place, Simple Minds!) theme song "Don't You Forget About Me". The models kid around in shots that are direct rip-offs from scenes from the film.

I didn't care for the movie in the first place. Second, it's as appropriate a match for today's teenagers as Bye-Bye Birdie was for teenagers of my generation--totally wrong! SQUARE! Just the fact that JCPenney is running this underscores how big a fogey they are.

I got my Ace stickers and a promo flyer Saturday. Three different stickers, all based on the "regular flavor" can art. The largest one must be the one they send to beverage package stores and convenience markets for on their refrigerators.

Makes up for the experience I had with actually drinking the stuff. :Þ

Anybody else getting physical mailings from on-line gambling outfits?

I got a pamphlet from "bet.us" detailing the NHS, NBA and NCAA wagering options.

Man, I hate these people. Who do I have to nuke to get rid of them once and for all? Don't think I can't get fissile material.

The other day one of Aaron Copland's symphonies was playing on the radio, and Mom quipped about a certain dog food commercial. I thought about it and realized that I doubt anybody would remember that particular brand or what their gimmick for the TV commercials was, as the campaign in question ended perhaps before the 1980s.

Maybe if it had been parodized on The Simpsons...

One thing that must set off everybody's Good-Ol-BoyDAR about me: I loathe the Lynard Skynard song "Sweet Home Alabama". Always have.

I hate it that KFC uses snippets of it as their TV and radio ad jingle now.

I want somebody to record a Skynardesque version of "Blue Moon of Kentucky" and for KFC to adopt that as their theme.

...Somehow I don't believe Massachusetts has yet begun to overreact.

I wonder if the MA Legislature has it in their power to have Turner Broadcasting's networks shut out of the state's cable TV and satellite TV providers. Punish the corporation for their bad behavior by fining them based on their cut of the providers' revenue.

I wonder how long Boston can go without PGA Tour Network.

Just saw a TV ad for the XBox360 game Sneak King, where the player takes on the role of the titular mascot of Burger King.

I don't want to play it.

I want to HACK it.

Put in Clara Peller--with a nice big cast-iron skillet. Battle cry: "Where's the Beef?!"

Put in Noids. *maniacal giggling*

Put in Herb.

Put in MacTonight. (Yes, I have seen the clip of Sneak King delivering a drive-by to Ronald McDonald.) Heck, in this context, the HamBurglar would be fun. *robblerobblerobble*

Oh well. It's very seldom that I eat fast food now. It's probably been at least six months since I'd eaten at a Burger King. I know it must be a sign of real desperation for a company to go to such an extreme in order to promote their brand and company image. It won't get me to "dine with Royalty" as Mumma calls it, but it is a sign of the times.
